Life Cycle
Southern kingfish or whiting reach sexual maturity by one year. At that age, the males are approximately 5.3 inches long, while females are substantially larger, at a length of about 7.5 inches. Spawning takes place from April to October.
Migration:
Seasonal. Deeper water in the winter and surf zones in the summer.
Fishing Tips:
Southern kingfish feed primarily on benthic invertebrates, including shrimps, sand fleas, and other small crustaceans. They also eat clams and small fish. whiting use their chin barbel to locate prey on the bottom. Larvae feed on zooplankton. Ultralight tackle will work fine. Casts only need to be to the back edge of the waves.
