The Best Saltwater Spinning Reels

 Penn Spinfisher VI

Body – aluminum body and side plates.

CNC Gear System – Computer-controlled gear cutting from a solid disk.  This is the second strongest way to make gears.

IPX5 Sealed design – IP stands for Ingress Protection, X means that it is not rated for dust, 5 means low pressure, 4.4 PSI, water jets from any direction will not intrude.  If the reel is underwater it has a good chance of taking on water. There is much more to this standard but suffice to say it is pretty good and should keep splashes from intruding.

The oversized bail wire virtually eliminates the chance of failure in the heat of battle.  I have found nothing in the reviews about the bail wire.   I own a V and also have not had any problems so I guess this works well.

A sealed drag system means a washer is between the drag and the outside world.  See IPX5.

HT-100 drag washers are carbon fiber laminated to fiberglass.  The design has been tested with 100 MILES of line passed through the drag with no visible wear.

Line capacity rings tell you approximately how much line is left on the reel.

A braid-ready spool means there is a rubber insert that will keep the braid from slipping.  No mono backing is needed.

Penn Slammer III

The primary difference between the Slammer and Spinfisher is the Slammer uses IPX6 seals rather than IXP5 of the Spinfisher. The Slammer uses the Dura-Drag system.  Also, the Slammer is between 1.8 and 4.5 Ounces heaver.  I assume that this weight is in the housing and gears making the Slammer stronger.

IPX6 Sealed design – IP stands for Ingress Protection, X means that it is not rated for dust, 6 means moderate pressure, 15.5 PSI, water jets from any direction will not intrude.  If the reel is underwater it may still take on water.  There is much more to this standard but suffice to say it is pretty good and should keep splashes from intruding.

The Dura-Drag system is the same drag washer as the HT-100 but with a coating to make it smoother.
